Zircon Expands

The first 6 months of 2012 have been particularly busy at Zircon HQ.  In February we put a team of 8 together for a client at short notice and we are currently ramping up to deliver another large project that will have a team of 15 working on it at its peak.

In order to meet these challenges we have, and are continuing to, expand our team of engineers.  We have been in the fortunate position for some time now where our current engineers all possess many years of software engineering experience.  What this means is that we have been able to augment our existing team with a number of more junior additions.

Chris Sloper has recently joined Zircon as a Software Engineer, Nick Kift as a Graduate Software Engineer and we are shortly to welcome Chris Lee aboard as a new apprentice.  We also have a student from Bath University joining us for his placement year and another local student who will be joining the team for the duration of the summer holidays.

Of course, expansion does bring its own problems; none more so than introducing inexperienced members of staff onto our clients very important projects, and ensuring that those new engineers are able to gel with the current team.  To alleviate this risk, all new members of staff go through our in-house training and mentoring program to ensure that they capable of meeting and surpassing our customers’ expectations.

The in-house training consists of a Quality System Training course, designed to allow new employees to understand Zircon’s BS EN ISO9001:2008 (TickIT) approved quality processesand tools.  Also, all technical employees are encouraged to complete the Association of Project Manager’s (APM) Introductory Level qualification so that even if they will not be managing a project immediately they still have an appreciation of what their project manager will require from them.

Finally, we have put in place a mentoring program which aims to provide the following benefits:

  • Give career and professional guidance to junior staff
  • Help to create a friendly and supportive atmosphere, which encourages team work and communication
  • Help new employees feel part of the Zircon team and have someone who they can ask for help.

All these are important aspects when putting together a team that can hit the ground running to solve our client’s unique problems.
